NAACP LEADS PACK OF CIVIL RIGHTS ORGANIZATIONS SPEAKING OUT AGAINST "BIGOTRY"
Broad Array of Civil Rights Groups, Religious Organizations, Constitutional Lawyers, Labor and Child Welfare Experts Oppose Anti-Gay Constitutional Amendment
ANNAPOLIS - The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has joined a number of civil rights and religious organizations that oppose attempts to amend Maryland's Constitution to ban the legal protections of marriage for same-sex couples. In a letter to the Maryland General Assembly, NAACP Executive Chairman Julian Bond stated: "For the NAACP, the issue is clear -- President Bush's amendment was an attempt to write bigotry into the Constitution. Its state-level variations have the same aim."
The House Judiciary Committee will hear testimony today regarding House Bill 48, the so-called Marriage Protection Act sponsored by Del. Don Dwyer (R-Anne Arundel County).
Those testifying against the amendment include representatives from:
Equality Maryland
Human Rights Campaign
Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington
Maryland Chapter of the AFL/CIO
Maryland Chapter of the NAACP
Maryland Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers
National Black Justice Coalition
Presbytery of Baltimore
Progressive Maryland
Public Justice Center
United Church of Christ Central Atlantic Conference
Unitarian Universalist Association
"The NAACP is the premier civil rights group in the nation. It is an honor to stand with them against this hate-filled attempt to amend our state constitution to support discrimination," said Equality Maryland Field Organizer Meredith Moise. "As an African-American woman and NAACP member, I am profoundly aware of the organization's history in promoting justice, and this position attests to the NAACP's commitment to justice and respect for all citizens of Maryland."
