Civil Rights For Everyone at Equality Maryland's Fall Jazz Brunch
NAACP Chairman Julian Bond to Give Keynote Address at November 20 Baltimore Event
BALTIMORE - Equality Maryland, the state's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender advocacy organization, announced today that Julian Bond, Chairman of the Board of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the oldest and largest U.S. civil rights organization, will be the keynote speaker at its Third Annual Jazz Brunch scheduled for November 20th at the Wyndham Hotel in Baltimore.
Julian Bond has been a key participant in the movement for civil rights and economic justice ever since his student days. As an activist who has faced jail, a veteran of more than 20 years service in the Georgia General Assembly, a university professor and as a writer, he has been on the cutting edge of social change since 1960.
"There is no one in America who doesn't deserve civil rights protections," said Bond. "When anyone is denied those rights, we are all weakened; when those rights are expanded, we are all made stronger."
Other speakers at this year's brunch will include Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley and author Taylor Branch, whose Pulitzer Prize-winning Parting the Waters established him as a national authority on America's civil rights movement.
"Calls for a constitutional amendment banning same-gender marriage have heightened since arguments in ACLU's marriage litigation case were heard before the Circuit Court in August," said Executive Director Dan Furmansky. "With a decision by the court possible at any time, there is no better moment for a man of Mr. Bond's stature to offer the LGBT community and its allies in Maryland his strength, wisdom and conviction as we work towards fairness for all families."
