PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY TOWN HALL MEETING TO ADDRESS HOMOPHOBIA IN THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY

Former Delegate Rusher Baker to Moderate "Black Homophobia: A Real Dialogue on Gay Marriage, Religion, and the Closet"

Bowie, MD - Equality Maryland, Maryland's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) advocacy organization, announced today that it will present a town hall meeting on homophobia in the Black community at the Christian Community Presbyterian Church, 3120 Belair Road, Bowie Maryland. The meeting is scheduled for June 14 at 7:00 p.m. and will feature pro and anti same-sex marriage panelists in a moderated forum. The presentations will be followed by an open dialogue with the purpose of discussing a taboo subject within the African-American community -- homophobia, same-sex marriage, and the role of gays and lesbians in the Black church. The town hall is sponsored in partnership with the National Black Justice Coalition and the Unity Fellowship Church of Washington, D.C.

"African American gays and lesbians have a long history of contributions to the Black Church," said H. Alexander Robinson, National Black Justice Coalition Executive Director and CEO. "We are looking forward to having a healthy, honest and spirited discussion about the need for civil rights advancements for gay Americans and why we must end the denial of the right to marry."

In addition to Mr. Robinson, featured speakers will include:

  • Dr. Alvin Williams & Nigel Simon, a Prince George's County couple suing the state of Maryland for the right to marry
  • Rev. Dr. Amita Binta, Covenant Baptist Church
  • Minister Joyce Tabb, Immanuel Evangelical Christian Church
  • Daayiee Abdullah, of Al-Fatiha, a Muslim LGBT organization
  • Meredith Moise, Field Organizer for Equality Maryland
  • Brandon Braud, Field Organizer for the Human Rights Campaign

The forum will be moderated by former Delegate Rushern Baker, currently Executive Director of the Community Teachers Institute.
