From the Washington BladeLambda Rising's Baltimore store to close
Shop has been in business for 24 years
Thursday, February 21, 2008
Baltimore's Lambda Rising Book and Gift shop is set to close soon though a closing date had not been set by Wednesday. The shop, in the city's Mount Vernon neighborhood, had been in business 24 years but declining sales contributed to its demise.
"Unfortunately, in recent years with the increasing reliance on online ordering and competition from chain bookstores, support for specialty bookstores like Lambda Rising has been waning," said owner Deacon Maccubbin in a press release announcing the close. "I'm afraid the GLBT community in Baltimore just has not been supporting the store like they used to."
Maccubbin owns other Lambda bookstores, including one in Washington's Dupont Circle, but some locations have struggled. Last summer, Maccubbin pulled the plug on a Norfolk, Va., location. The Baltimore store, which opened in 1984, will run a liquidation sale in the coming weeks. It's located at 241 West Chase Street.
