Gay Candidate Wins College Park Election

Friday, November 16, 2007

Patrick Wojahn, an openly gay man, won a seat on the College Park City Council in elections earlier this month.

Wojahn, 32, along with his partner, Dave Kolesar, were two of the plaintiffs in Maryland's same-sex marriage lawsuit.

Wojahn won one of two seats up for grabs in College Park's District 1 after both incumbents did not file for re-election.

"I'm thrilled and excited that the voters of District 1 have selected me to represent them on the City Council," Wojahn told The Gazette newspaper. "I want to work with the Prince George's County police to expand the police presence on our streets and to start meeting with them to talk about expanding the police contract program. I would like to work toward community oriented policing, a method where police get to know residents in a particular area."

Wojan is a lawyer with University Legal Services and serves on the board of directors of Equality Maryland.

Wojan was one of 31 LGBT candidates supported by the Victory Fund, a political action committee, who won their elections this year.
