Sometimes Everyone Is On The Same Side Of The Aisle

For Montgomery County's own Alan Keyes, who has never met a microphone he didn't like, homosexuality is "selfish hedonism."

Keyes made his comments during an interview Monday on gay radio talk show OutQ at the convention.

Asked if his views held true for Cheney's lesbian daughter, Keyes said "of course."

"Dick Cheney may or may not like the truth, but it can be spoken," said Keyes, who had lost two U.S. Senate races in Maryland and two presidential bids before the Illinois GOP asked him to take on Democrat Barack Obama in the U.S. Senate race there.

At least one Maryland resident hoped Keyes will stay in Illinois.

"Most Marylanders would like to disavow any association with Alan Keyes, and while we certainly know he will fail in Illinois, it's a pity he has to bring his hateful rhetoric back to the state of Maryland with his tail between his legs," said Dan Furmansky, executive director of gay civil rights organization Equality Maryland in Silver Spring. "The only hedonism at play is Alan Keyes' love affair with the sound of his own voice."

The Chicago Tribune quoted Bush-Cheney campaign spokesman Steve Schmidt as calling Keyes' remarks "inappropriate."
