Director of Development

Organization Background


Equality Maryland, Maryland's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, is hiring a full-time Director of Development to be an integral part of the statewide advocacy group and educational foundation.

Basic Responsibilities


Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Development holds primary responsibility for the organization, planning, and operation of Equality Maryland's fund-raising program. This individual will oversee all aspects of fund development, including annual giving, major and planned giving, and corporate and foundation relations, focusing on the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of fund-raising prospects.

Specific Responsibilities:


  • Manages the organization's annual giving program, including direct mail; the Sustainer program; online, workplace, and Board giving; and all special fund-raising appeals.
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive major gifts program, soliciting and increasing significant personal commitments from individuals to Equality Maryland, including leadership of the organization's planned giving program, the Legacy Society.
  • Administers the foundation relations program, identifying new and emerging prospects, writing grant proposals and letters of inquiries, and submitting stewardship reports to foundation partners.
  • Leads a growing corporate relations program, providing support to the organization's Business Roundtable volunteer committee while personally securing gifts, sponsorships, and advertising support from area businesses.
  • Manages all special event planning for the organization, including annual galas such as Jazz Brunch and Night Out for Equality, as well as house parties and other functions. Responsibilities include oversight and support of volunteer committees, securing event sites and logistics, and soliciting individual and corporate sponsorships.
  • Supervises the organization's Development/Communications Associate, overseeing donor cultivation and stewardship activities, and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the donor and prospect database.
  • Working with the Development/Communications Associate, oversees the development and dissemination of key communications vehicles, including the organization's web page, newsletter, and annual report.
  • Works as a full partner with members of Equality Maryland's Board of Directors and Fund Development Committee, providing staff support and engaging individuals in significant fund-raising activities.
  • Organizes and carries out the annual and long-range planning process for the fund-raising function of Equality Maryland.
  • Provides fundraising guidance and support to Equality Maryland's political action committee (PAC) as needed.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director.

Qualifications


  • A Bachelor's degree and three to five years of prior fundraising experience, or its equivalent, is required.
  • Must possess experience in individual gift solicitation.
  • Should have experience working with volunteers and managing special events.
  • Effective time management skills are essential.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a self-motivated, outgoing, detail-oriented nature are required.
  • Must be willing to travel regionally on behalf of Equality Maryland.
  • Must have a passion for marriage equality as a civil rights issue and a desire to see LGBT individuals afforded the same rights and responsibilities as all Marylanders.
  • Working knowledge of the Internet and Microsoft Office software is required. Experience working with relational database systems is important.

The salary range for this position is from the mid-forties to low-fifties based on experience and qualifications. Health care and other benefits will be provided. The review of applications will begin immediately and end when a successful candidate is identified and hired.
