Personal Stories: Maryanne
I have been discriminated against since I came out and had to re-enter the work force as a girl. Even with an excellent resume and very good references, it was impossible to find a job during the first six months, and I was desperate.
I was constantly told again and again that I was the most qualified applicant, and I tried everything. I was even going to leave cooking all together for a while if it meant getting ANY job that would put bread on the table and keep me from getting thrown out by my wife.
I applied at warehouses, shipping firms, retail stores and bakeries, and was told the same thing over and over, again and again: "We like you;" "Amazing resume;" "Best applicant so far;" "Most qualified;" "Well-spoken;" "Intelligent;" "Good references;" etc., etc. Still, I was never called back by a single one of them for a second interview, was told the positions had been filled, or had my calls avoided all together.
This is why I am still trying desperately, even now, to build my own foodservice company on not even a shoestring of a budget. I'm going for mainstream clientele, but have had several potential leads immediately ditch me as soon as they hear my voice on the telephone. I honestly don't even sound THAT masculine anymore.
If it weren't for my incredible wife, I'd have been out in the street already.
