The Issues:
Civil Marriage Equality and
Partner Protections in Maryland
Equality Maryland knows that equality under the law for same-sex couples means equal marriage rights. The same social, legal and financial benefits currently afforded to heterosexual couples in Maryland can only be replicated for same-sex couples by granting the same marriage license. At the same time, Equality Maryland understands that each protection granted to same-sex couples fills an important void left by marriage inequality. Therefore, as we continue to work to earn full marriage equality in the court, we will also continue to seek greater partner protections and benefits for LGBT Marylanders in the General Assembly, as we have already with the Medical Decision Making Act and Advance Directives.
