HIV/AIDS
Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), the advanced stage of disease caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), has been at epidemic levels for the last two decades in the State of Maryland. Maryland has recorded a total of 28,593 AIDS cases and 15,528 deaths among AIDS cases through September 30, 2005. Since Maryland HIV surveillance began in 1994, a total of 18,004 non-AIDS HIV cases have been reported. Although there are a number of myths surrounding HIV and gay men, HIV does overall affect oppressed minority groups disparately. Because of this and other factors, it is a civil rights issue, especially in Maryland.
