Family Spotlight:
Carrie and Pamela
Carrie Evans and Pamela Bennett, of Baltimore, have been together since 1999. Carrie works at the Human Rights Campaign and Pam at the Johns Hopkins University. For three years of their relationship, they lived in different states connected with daily emails, nightly calls and monthly visits. When choosing a common state to merge their lives (and their cats), Maryland was high on the list. The state had just passed an anti-discrimination law; this was an important consideration for Carrie, who had almost been (legally) denied housing in Illinois with her former partner because they were lesbians. Pam also pointed to the GLBT-friendly policies of the Johns Hopkins University as being an incentive. The university offers equal benefits to employees' spouses and domestic partners. They currently reside in the GLBT-friendly neighborhood of Hunting Ridge in Baltimore City.
